Whatsapp now reaches 800 Million Monthly Active User
WhatsApp is an instant messaging app for smartphones that operates under a subscription business model. The proprietary, cross-platform app uses the Internet to send text messages, images, video, user location and audio media messages. WhatsApp Inc., was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo!.
In January 2015, WhatsApp was the most globally popular messaging app with more than 700 million active users, with India alone having a user base of more than 70 million.
WhatsApp has reached the 800 million monthly active users mark on Friday (April 17, 2015) retaining its position of being one of the largest platforms for messaging around the globe.
WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook for a whopping $19 billion last October and since then, it has seen consistent growth. The latest 800 million monthly active user mark is up from the earlier 700 million in January and 600 million last August.
The messenger service lets you send text, pictures, voice messages, to other users of the app for free. Recently, the service added voice calling feature to allow users to place calls over the Internet.
This latest addition is expected to take on the likes of Skype and Viber. The 800 million monthly active users mark puts WhatsApp in the lead position of being one of the largest social services around. Other social services like Twitter reported a user base of 288 million active users/month, while Instagram noted its monthly user base at 300 million. Parent Facebook reported an average of 1.39 billion monthly active users as of December last year.
